Temporary CWC Closure

Dear Calgary Winter Club Members,
In light of the most recent information received from the Alberta Health Services this evening, the CWC Management team and Board of Directors have made the difficult decision to close the Calgary Winter Club until further notice.  The closure took effect at midnight on Sunday, March 15, 2020.
The safety and well-being of our community including our members, guests and staff continues to be our top priority.  We also recognize our responsibility to the larger community that extends beyond our facility.  Our goal is to part of the solution that helps to slow the transmission of the COVID-19 virus.
Please know that we are not aware of any cases of COVID-19 among our members, guests, or staff.  However, given that the virus has now moved to community transmission, we can no longer feel confident that it is in the best interest of our community to remain open.
We understand the closure will have a significant impact on our members and that you may have many questions.  We kindly ask for your patience as we endeavour to work through our next steps over the next few days.  In the meantime, please refer to our frequently asked questions below for answers that we have for you today.  We will continue to update you via email and the CWC website.   
For the many medical professionals amongst our membership, we wish you the very best in your heroic efforts to help our community through this crisis, and would like to extend our gratitude.

Club Closure FAQ's

Board of Directors

Board of Directors

The Calgary Winter Club is governed by a Board of Directors consisting of between nine and fifteen shareholders (or spouses) that have been elected by the shareholders of the Club at an Annual General Meeting.  All Board positions are for three year terms, with each Director eligible to serve a maximum of two consecutive terms.  The Calgary Winter Club is a member owned Club and as such is governed by this volunteer Board of Directors.   The Board appoints individual Directors to the key roles of Board Chair, President, Vice-President, Finance and Audit Committee Chair and Governance and Nominating Committee Chair.  The individuals serving in these positions are collectively referred to as the Board Executive Committee.  The CEO/General Manager is also appointed by the Board of Directors and is a non-voting member of both the Board and the Executive Committee. 

The Board of Directors is accountable to the membership of the Calgary Winter Club and is mandated to provide governance, oversight and strategic direction for the Club.  The Board provides guidance and direction to the CEO/General Manager and senior management team, while acting on behalf of the membership as trustees of the Club.

Our Story

Our Story

In the mid-1950’s the idea of creating a second private Sport and Social Club in the City of Calgary was being made a reality by a group of ambitious and active North-Calgary community members that wanted to create a place of their own. Roy Farran, then Editor of the North Hill News, realized there wasn’t a high quality sports facility in the Northern part of the city to accommodate the individuals who wanted to curl, bowl or simply socialize. Hence the monumental planning began in the late 1950s. The group of interested individuals and families were growing by the day and the momentum to build a world class facility was picking up quickly.  

Once the North Hill lot had been purchased from the City of Calgary in 1957, the Club started selling memberships at a downtown office located at 818 16th Avenue NW. The Club sold memberships for $500 each with an ambitious goal of securing 1200 memberships before starting construction on a $600,000 structure. The Club’s Board opened tenders for excavation of the building site on April 1st, 1959, and the sod was officially turned on April 18th by Alberta Minister Fred Colborne. In the spring of 1960, construction was progressing, and the Club had 1200 shareholders, along with 17 families on a waiting list. When the Club officially opened its doors on December 9th, 1960, there was a dining room, swimming pool, five-pin bowling alley, skating rink, badminton courts, outdoor tennis and a curling rink. Today, the Club offers all of these original activities and much, much more. The Calgary Winter Club is now considered to be one of the top private Sport and Social Clubs in North America.

The Club is now a second home to roughly 3,000 shareholders and their families, totalling 8,000 members of all ages, who benefit from a vast array of activities and opportunities. The 280,000 sq. ft. Club, literally has something for everyone.

Hours of Operation

Monday to Friday: 5:15 am – 11:00 pm
Saturday, Sunday: 6:45 am – 11:00 pm
July & August the Club closes at 10:00pm Monday to Sunday.
